Millions watch live stream as world's music stars attend music awards show in Belfast

2011 MTV EMA Streamed Live to Global Fans

News Release: 7 November 2011

For the third year running, Viacom International Media Networks (VIMN) worked with Garland Partners Limited of the UK to help them stream one of its largest international music events—the 2011 MTV EMA—to fans around the world. Viewers in selected countries were able to watch live as singer-actress Selena Gomez not only hosted the main event, but provided back-stage commentary to fans via MTV’s websites.

From the comfort of their own computer screens or mobile devices, fans everywhere (who cast over 158 million votes for the awards) saw Lady Gaga secure her reign with four wins (Best Female, Best Song, Best Video, and Biggest Fan). American rockers 30 Seconds to Mars picked up awards for Best Alternative Act and for best performance on the MTV World Stage, while pop singers Justin Bieber and Bruno Mars also picked up two awards each (Best Male and Best Pop for Bieber, and Best Push and Best New for Mars).

This year’s show took place on Sunday, November 6 in Belfast, Northern Ireland, making it the fourth time this annual extravaganza has been hosted by a city in the United Kingdom.

To ensure that fans wouldn’t miss a moment of performers including The Red Hot Chili Peppers, Coldplay or Northern Ireland’s own Snow Patrol on their mobiles devices and laptops, MTV hired two AS8100 Cisco Media Processor platforms from Garland Partners to stream the show. The AS8100 was launched to give 8-stream output from a single platform for robust adaptive bit-rate streaming.

“The AS8100 is the best choice for MTV’s use,” say Lorna Garrett, Director of Garland Partners. “Unlike other encoders on the market, Cisco Media Processors support multiple formats in one unit, and are optimised to deliver adaptive streams, allowing users the best quality experience, whatever their bandwidth.”

Alec Hendry, Senior Director UK, Digital Media Technology & Innovation Lab, Viacom International Media Networks (VIMN) said, "The AS-8100 allows MTV to deliver the highest quality live stream to our audience, direct from our HD source. Ease of setup and reliability of the unit was a major deciding factor in selecting the Cisco Media Processor."

The 2011 MTV EMA was broadcast live from three locations: The Odyssey Arena, Belfast’s City Hall and Ulster Hall.

At last year’s event, held in Madrid, there were 4.5 million live streams online of the show, which included acts such as Rihanna, Plan B and Bon Jovi.
