300-mile Charity Cycle Ride from London to Amsterdam Streamed Live

Facing Rain and Pain for Charity's Gain

News Release: 3 September 2011

Neither wind, rain, crashes, punctured tyres, nor lack of sleep could keep one group of determined cyclists from their aim: to cycle 300 miles across four countries in just 24 hours to raise money for the benefit of blind and visually impaired children.

The IBC2IBC event, organised by The Vision Charity, saw 13 riders make the trip from Central London to the RAI Exhibition and Conference Centre in Amsterdam for the IBC2011 Show, the premier event for entertainment and news broadcasters worldwide. The riders had a fundraising target of £100,000.

The challenge was founded and led by Ciaran Doran of Harris Corporation. Ciaran was joined by other members of the broadcast industry, including Joss Armitage (Jump PR), Chris Blakeston (Audio Network), Darren Whitehead (IBC), Karl Stone (PieroFC), Simon Tillyer (TV Bay), Matt Robbins (TV Bay), Matt Upton (Arris), Anthony Harrison (Calrec Audio Ltd), Mark Hallinger (TV Technology Europe/Asia), Jonathan Cooper (NEC Display Solutions), Clare Bell (ASP), and Nick Pannaman (JCA TV).

More than 1.5 hours of the ride was streamed live courtesy of a LiveU LU60 cellular uplink backpack unit supplied by Garland Partners.

While the overall time for completion of the challenge was 27 hours, the riders’ actual time on the bikes was an only 18.5 hoursimpressive given the conditions under which they undertook the journey.

“Three hundred miles on a bike is a long, long way, whichever way you look at it,” said Joss Armitage. “The rain came as we approached Dover…along with a severe bout of cramp for one rider, later sorted with some careful nutritional intake.”

Once the team had made the ferry ride to France, they found their luck had changed; they now were riding with a tailwind and travelling on smooth, open roads. But after hours of night riding, the tiredness hit. “Darren Whitehead of IBC fame crashed his handcrafted, blacksmith-built 1932 steel ‘racer’ into the curb,” stated Joss. “The bike was fine, but Darren somewhat sore.”

After almost 100 miles, the team stopped for a bowl of pasta and a quick change of clothes before heading off for the final leg of the journey. “Despite having to use the Netherland’s well-intended, but not always logical bike paths, a quick ferry ride and some very odd, tiredness-fuelled conversations, the team rolled in to Amsterdam in the early evening and we immediately threw our bikes to the ground,” explained Joss. “Rarely has a beer tasted so good.”
