Students Election Streamed Live Results in Record Voter Turnout

Southampton University is leading the way for student elections. Year upon year, the student body votes to elect the sabbaticals who will run the Students' Union for the next year. This year, they set a UK record for student voter turnout with 7,156 votes (30.4% of the total students). The
y decided to pull out all the stops and stream their elections live through their website www.elections.susu.org.
Garland Partners Limited provided student union live streaming partner Inqb8r with the Inlet Spinnaker 7000 HD encoder to stream the content live onto the web. Inqb8r deliver high definition multimedia to numerous digital platforms, combining fresh, creative content with innovative technology resulting in rich, interactive viewer experiences. On the night of the election, they provided Southampton University with the perfect streaming solution.
Shot in HD using advanced adaptive streaming technology, they provided two 720p feeds at 1.5 MBps and 2.5 MBps and an SD feed at 700 KBps. The stream peaked at 800 concurrent users. However, the number of people viewing the site was 6,200 from over 25 countries including Australia and New Zealand.
The broadcast was responsible for 70% of the internet traffic from the university on the night and over 800GB of data was sent from the Southampton University Students' Union (SUSU) servers.
Viewers could interact with a Twitter wall or by texting in their support. Brighton's student union commented on Twitter, SU Brighton: "Absolutely astounded...looks like the bar has been raised" and Sam also tweeted: "The quality of the video is amazing. It hasn't skipped once!" The evening was a huge success with over 20 candidates battling it out for six positions.
