GPL Translates Problems into Solutions
Case Study
THE PROBLEM: The University Language Centre (ULC) based in the University of Manchester has a wide range of language-based and language-related degree courses, in 18 different languages. ULC wanted to create a low-cost way for students all to have access to a wide range of foreign television programming.
THE SOLUTION: Garland Pa
rtners (GPL) partnered with Teracue to stream 12 channels each in different languages into the ULC's multimedia studios and around the campus to a number of university IT clusters. Students are now abot to view the foreign-language content almost anywhere on campus.
"It is vital to give access to our learners to sources of spoken language in authentic contexts, via satellite TV broadcast from around the world." stated Jocelyn Wyburd, Executive Director, University Language Centre. "Our old analogue distribution system was limited and out of date.
The university keeps costs down by making use of the free satellite programs and existing IT infrastructure, while still adding to the students' learning and viewing experiences.
Due to the flexible nature of the FR-2000 chassis, more blades can be added at any time in the future. This could include blades for additional satellite channels, UK Freeview channels, or the university's own channels using video encoders.
