Leeds University Swims to Success
in BUCS Heats

News Release - 31 March 2011 (Revised)

Garland Partners Limited (GPL) is proud to sponsor the Leeds University swimming and water polo teams this year, and even prouder to announce that the teams have had a fantastic first term.

Using their new state-of-the-art swimming pool, Leeds hosted the Northern regional rounds of the British Universities & Colleges Sport (BUCS) swimming championships, with 38 teams from 28 different universities attending. The Leeds 1st team―competing in Division 2 this year―had seven first-place finishes, three second-place finishes, and one third-place finish, leaving them with an 18-point lead in front of second-placed Durham, and a place in the finals held in March at Loughborough University.

In addition, the newly formed Leeds 2nd team competed in Division 3, receiving three first-place positions and a place in the final heat at Loughborough.

This has been one of the most successful starts for the swimming teams; they have already earned more qualifying points than last year and still have another competition in hand. If successful, the teams may be promoted to Division 1 next year, where they will compete against some of the strongest teams in the country, including Loughborough and Nottingham.

With the addition of new coach Joe Carr, the water polo teams have also had some great results. The men’s team won against Edinburgh University 9-6 and Manchester University 5-4. The women have had a fantastic first term too, beating Durham 21-3 and Cheshire 25-6.

On 19 March 2011, the Leeds Gryphons Swimmers competed at Loughborough University for the 2011 BUCS Team Championship Final. The Leeds 1st Team finished in Silver Medal position, with the Leeds 2nd taking a hard-fought fourth place. However, we are pleased to report that both teams gained promotion for next season. Two swimmers, Rebecca Naunton and Rachel Haigh, won every event in which they participated.

GPL congratulates all the teams, and wishes everyone the best of luck in all forthcoming events. We will continue to update our website with the teams' results.
